The kiteboat project has existed in some form since 1997, when don montague first began attaching kites to boats. between 1997 and 2006, don worked with a team in hawaii to develop kites for use with surfing canoes, small catamarans, and large motored cats; their accomplishments included wave-riding and several island crossings.. The wind speed steadily increased as we made our way toward the city in choppy water. the boat did very well upwind—angles close to 40 degrees at speeds close to 28 knots, with 3 crew. visitor david fu joined the kiteboat crew, and we foiled under the bay bridge between yerba buena and sf.. The advantages of a kiteboat over a traditional sailboat are manifold. as a kite pulls a boat, it does not also heel the boat over or pitch it forward as a sail does. this fact means that a kiteboat does not require large counterbalancing forces which, in opposing the heeling and pitching forces of a sail, create drag and present practical.
