can you paint over gelcoat on a boat
I did not realize you can simply paint over gel coat, i thought you had to remove it. the gel coat on my deck (my own 30 year old boat) is pretty porous, though the gel coat on the hull is still shiny. there is some crazing but nothing major. i have been contemplating re-painting my boat for years, but i thought it would require a ton of. The antifoul is definitely coming off as i won't be keeping it in the water and i'm keen to get that old "gelcoat look" back. the boat been completely stripped out inside and i can have it upturned to work on so practicality isn't a problem. i've heard of people painting over their gelcoat with a 2 pack paint that comes out "like gelcoat".. Nope someone told you wrong , you can paint over gelcoat!! i am getting ready to paint mine [ pic of work do far ] you just need to fix all the hole, scratchs, nicks frist !! i am using marine tex felling all the holes ,just about bone sanding !! if your boat is as bad , it will take 40 hours plus!! i bet i got 60 in sanding mine !! john.
can you paint over gelcoat on a boat Making sure that your gelcoat is applied evenly on the paintbrush, go over the base of the boat, beginning on one side and working your way over. make sure that you give your boat a thick layer as a thin layer may not give a complete seal. if available, you can use a spray gelcoat.. Over time and with use, the gelcoat on your boat can become dull, making your boat look old. restoring your gelcoat can help restore the shine of your boat and protect its surface. begin by making sure any surface dirt and stains are removed..
